National Law Journal: Roberts Scolds Solicitor General Over Wasting 'Hard-Working' Judges' Time, Monsanto Hit With $2B in Punitives in Oakland Roundup Trial

A MESSAGE FROM THE EDITOR

Chief Justice John Roberts Jr. showed some displeasure—in dissent—with U.S. Solicitor General Noel Francisco's arguments in a case the Supreme Court ruled on Monday. Joined by justices Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito Jr. and Brett Kavanaugh, Roberts questioned a Justice Department argument that would compel the "hard-working judges" of the Eighth Circuit to take a "fresh look" at a case, Marcia Coyle reports. Roberts said the Supreme Court should only vacate the judgment of a lower court after "affording that court the courtesy of reviewing the case on the merits."

A MESSAGE FROM THE EDITOR

On Friday, the U.S. Justice Department announced it is opposing a class action settlement that would grant a $3.8 million legal-fee award to plaintiffs’ lawyers who alleged Dial overstated the ability of its antibacterial soap to kill germs. The DOJ said in a prepared statement that the fee award “would afford little value to consumers while handsomely compensating attorneys,” calling the settlement over Dial's antibacterial soap "virtually worthless."
