A MESSAGE FROM THE EDITOR

A federal judge in Washington ruled Thursday that the U.S. Labor Department attempted to make an "end-run" around the Affordable Care Act with a proposed rule that allowed small businesses and self-employed individuals to collectively participate in a health care plan. U.S. District Judge John Bates concluded the proposed rule violated the Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974 (ERISA). Dan Clark reports. And Jessie Liu, the U.S. attorney in Washington, and the Trump administration’s pick for third-in-command at the U.S. Justice Department, withdrew from consideration yesterday. She reportedly faced opposition from members of the Senate Judiciary Committee over her past association with the National Association of Women Lawyers, a group that opposed Justice Samuel Alito’s nomination to the Supreme Court. C. Ryan Barber reports.
