GOOD MORNING, MASSACHUSETTS. And because I forgot to mention yesterday — L'shanah tovah!

WHEN THE CAVALRY FINALLY ARRIVES — We may be a week post-primary, but the still-contested result in the Merrimack Valley isn't the only congressional primary still being dabbled in.

EMILY's List made a surprise endorsement of Ayanna Pressley yesterday — surprising because it came six whole days after Pressley handily beat Rep. Michael Capuano. She has no Republican challenger. Pressley has had a long history with the PAC, which is dedicated to electing women, including being one of the women people awarded EMILY's List's "Rising Star award" in 2015. At the time, EMILY's List said it did not get involved in party primaries.
EMILY's List's other surprise involvement yesterday came in the MA-03 congressional primary, as the PAC endorsed Lori Trahan over Dan Koh. As the still-unresolved outcome hurtles toward a recount, it's a boost for Trahan, who currently has a 121-vote margin over Koh. EMILY's List put its thumb on the scale by declaring Trahan the winner. "Lori won a crowded primary and has shown she has what it takes to deliver this must-win seat for Democrats to take back the House," Stephanie Schriock, president of EMILY's List said in a statement yesterday.

TSONGAS ARENA LATEST —
- "Galvin orders recount in 3rd Congressional District Democratic primary," by Alana Melanson, Lowell Sun: "Secretary of State William Galvin Monday afternoon ordered a district-wide recount in the 3rd Congressional District Democratic primary. ... Democratic candidate Dan Koh, who came in second in the race, filed a sufficient number of signatures to trigger the recount, Galvin's office said in a statement."

- "Secretary of State seizing control of Lowell, Lawrence election offices," by Alana Melanson, Lowell Sun: "Secretary of State William Galvin will take direct control of the election offices in Lowell and Lawrence to run any upcoming recounts and oversee the administration of the November general election."

CHARLIE BAKER FAIL!

ON THE STUMP —
- "MBTA's poor station conditions are a campaign issue," by Adam Vaccaro, Boston Globe: "The poor condition of MBTA stations, garages, and other facilities across Greater Boston suddenly emerged as a campaign issue in the race for governor Monday, as Republican incumbent Charlie Baker and his Democratic challenger, Jay Gonzalez, traded blame over the state of the system."

- "Dem super PACs keep getting bigger as candidates turn on PAC money," by Maggie Severns, POLITICO: "The super PACs charged with helping Democrats take back the House and Senate are raking in record sums from donors motivated by opposition to President Donald Trump, even as a rising class of candidates — like Texas Democrat Beto O'Rourke and Ayanna Pressley, who scored a primary upset over Rep. Mike Capuano in Massachusetts last week — are rejecting corporate PAC money and using campaign finance as a purity test against entrenched opponents. Meanwhile, the Democratic super PACs are using their new cash reserves to take over more and more of the party's core functions, expanding from a focus on TV advertising to run major field programs and digital campaigns."

- "Ayanna Pressley Campaign Says She'll Keep Turning Down Corporate Donations In Congress," by Callum Borchers, WBUR: "The extension of Pressley's policy on corporate donations could further solidify her populist credentials. Yet, in a district that includes business hub Kendall Square, Pressley's decision also could sour relations between her and companies there — particularly those that preferred Capuano in the first place."

- "Experts predict gnarly U.S. Senate race," by Christian M. Wade, Eagle Tribune: "Political observers expect a crush of money from Republican-backed groups running negative ads against Warren ahead of the Nov. 6 election — if not to help Diehl get elected, then to blunt a possible challenge to Republican President Donald Trump in 2020."

- "Transgender rights groups outspend opponents in Massachusetts ballot question fight," by Shira Schoenberg, Springfield Republican: "According to campaign finance reports filed Friday, Freedom for All Massachusetts, which supports the law, raised $1.8 million in 2018 and spent $1 million. Keep Massachusetts Safe, which wants to repeal the law, raised $106,300 in 2018 and spent $80,000. ... Since the start of the campaign in 2017, Freedom for All Massachusetts has raised $2.7 million, while Keep Massachusetts Safe has raised $286,000."

- "It's hospitals vs. nurses' union in high-spending ballot fight," by Shira Schoenberg, Springfield Republican: "A coalition to defeat a ballot question that would mandate specific nurse staffing ratios in hospitals has raised and spent more than $7 million, with two months still to go before the election."

DATELINE BEACON HILL —
- "Post-Primary, It's Lame Duck Season In The Massachusetts Legislature," by Carrie Healey, New England Public Radio: "No western Massachusetts incumbents lost. But there were some upsets in the eastern part of the state, including state Rep. Jeff Sanchez, who lost his re-election bid. State House News Service reporter Matt Murphy was paying attention to that race. Did Sanchez see that coming?"

THE WARREN REPORT —
- "Penn faculty stand by Elizabeth Warren as controversy around her heritage flares up again," by Max Cohen, The Daily Pennsylvanian: "One figure at the heart of this issue is Penn Law professor Stephen Burbank, who was a member of the appointments committee and part of a subcommittee that investigated all minority prospects for jobs at Penn Law when Warren was being considered for a professorial position. ... For Burbank, the matter is simple: Warren was not seen as a minority candidate."

FRONT PAGE PLAY — Herald: "'THE COVER-UP CONTINUES,'" "PRESSURE PACKED" — Globe: "State takes control of two cities' elections," "Unions go old-school in fight with utility," "Boston luxury, minus Bostonians," "T fixes become campaign issue," "The dog days of fall."

THE LOCAL ANGLE —
- "A tribute to their sacrifice on 9/11," by Dave Rogers, Newburyport Daily News: "As hundreds of American flags fluttered in the brisk wind Sunday on the Bartlet Mall, there were tales of bravery, resolve and sacrifice."

- "Unions taking an old-school stand against National Grid," by Katie Johnston, Boston Globe: "The picketers are among 1,250 United Steelworkers members who have been locked out by National Grid for nearly three months, with no end to a fierce contract dispute in sight. Every day, the locked-out workers are out picketing company facilities, holding demonstrations, heckling replacement workers, and documenting what they say are numerous safety violations by inexperienced contractors and supervisors now doing their jobs. The locked-out workers are getting unemployment, which pays them about half their base salary, capped at $769 a week, but have no health insurance."

- "On waterfront, Trustees survey says Bostonians want parks over development," by Milton J. Valencia, Boston Globe: "The survey, by the Trustees of Reservations, a conservation advocacy group, found that 85 percent of nearly 500 residents polled believe that Boston's waterfront is vulnerable to the effects of climate change, and two-thirds said parks would improve the environment."
