(photo: Science Focus) States Sue Trump Over Blocking of California Emissions Rules Al Jazeera Excerpt: "A group of 23 states on Friday sued to block the administration of President Donald Trump from undoing California's authority to set strict car pollution rules." EXCERPT: On September 6, the Wall Street Journal reported that the US Department of Justice launched an antitrust probe of Ford Motor Co, Volkswagen AG, BMW AG, and Honda Motor Co - automobile companies that struck a voluntary agreement with California to reduce vehicle emissions. The rules, which date from the era of former US President Barack Obama, called for a fleet-wide fuel efficiency average of 46.7 miles per gallon by 2025, with average annual increases of about five percent, compared with 37 miles per gallon by 2026 under the Trump administration's preferred option to freeze requirements. US Secretary of Transportation Elaine Chao said Thursday that the administration will finalise revisions in the coming weeks. "No state has the authority to opt out of the nation's rules," she said, "and no state has the right to impose its policies on everybody else in our whole country." Franklin) ACLU Report Alleges Medical Neglect, Maltreatment at Aurora ICE Facility Run by GEO Group Saja Hindi, The Denver Post Hindi writes: "The day Neda Samimi-Gomez learned her 64-year-old father had died in immigration detention in Aurora is etched in her memory." EXCERPT: Samimi was taking methadone and did not receive appropriate medical care for his withdrawal, which a federal investigation later found fell short of ICE standards. But Samimi was not the only detainee who suffered medical maltreatment at the Aurora facility, according to a new report released Wednesday by the American Civil Liberties Union of Colorado. The 42-page report details alleged medical abuses and neglect at the Aurora facility, which is operated by The GEO Group under an ICE contract. Detainees are “confined without access to sufficient medical care, adequate nutrition, legal resources or, in many cases, basic human decency,” the ACLU report says. Despite those shortcomings, the report notes, The GEO Group reported a net income of $33.4 million in the fourth quarter of 2018 and is valued at $2.3 billion.
