A MESSAGE FROM THE EDITOR
Jesse Panuccio, the acting official in the Justice Department’s third-highest ranking job, is resigning his post Friday to return to the private sector, Ryan Lovelace reports. He submitted his resignation last week to U.S. Attorney General William Barr, who is assembling his own team. Next, Damon Keith, a civil rights icon and federal appeals judge who died Sunday at age 96, is being remembered as a mentor whose “moral compass” and courage broadly helped shape the lives of young lawyers across the country, and “changed the fabric of a nation,” Nate Robson reports. Keith first used the phrase “democracies die behind closed doors,” in a ruling in which the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit struck down the government’s secretive post-Sept. 11 panels used to deport Arab and Muslim immigrants. That phrase has become a rallying cry for transparency in the Trump era.
