Want to be onstage for the Democratic debates? Figure out how to get 65,000 "grassroots” donations and you qualify. The DNC has discovered the grassroots donors, big time.
Prior to Obama and Sanders, the DNC all but ignored small individual donors. Now their official policy makes success at the grassroots level compulsory.
That could make the Democrats more responsive to the grassroots or not, depending on what they decide after they gain power. Right now it’s a new source of campaign cash that the DNC is eager to exploit.
Some of the candidates like Bernie Sanders, technically an Independent not a Democrat, and Elizabeth Warren have proven track records for being responsive to the grassroots agenda while in office. With some of the other newly-minted “Progressive” candidates, it’s not as clear.
For smaller organizations like Reader Supported News, the DNC’s high-power, incentive-driven approach to harvesting cash from small donors is sucking all the oxygen out of the normal funding process and making survival difficult.
RSN is and has been here fighting for social and economic justice on a daily basis for years. Right now, 21 major candidates have declared they are running for the Democratic nomination. At least 20 of them won’t get it.
What you could end up with is a far more conservative and corporate-friendly candidate, and that’s why progressive pressure matters. The current surge in attention to the Progressive platform is a direct result, unsurprisingly, of progressive pressure from outside the party machine.
Choose wisely this election season and don’t forget RSN. We will still be here working for a progressive agenda when it’s over.
