CC News Letter 04 July - Lessons for the environmental movement from Gandhi

Dear Friend,

Does Gandhi have anything to contribute to environmental movements today? Ragha Kaushik takes a critical look at Gandhi's writings and concludes, "After centuries of “development” that have led to the extreme environmental catastrophes of the Anthropocene period, the least that we can do is to pay attention to these critiques."

India is fast becoming a WhatsApp lynch republic. Rumour spread on WhatsApp about child snatchers have killed at least a dozen people in different parts of India.  The Asian Human Rights Commission issues a strong statement on the state of affairs in India.

Shah Alam Khan may be a familiar name among CC readers. He's been writing for CC for over a decade. Now he's come out with a debut novel called "Man With The White Beard".  I've written a small appreciation of the novel. https://countercurrents.org/2018/07/04/man-with-the-white-beard-a-journey-into-our-nightmares/

Also more stories from around the world.

Lessons for the environmental movement from Gandhi
by Raghav Kaushik

Gandhi is not well-known for his views on the environment. Indeed, in his vast output, there is little explicit mention of the environment. Yet, in Gandhi’s views, one finds a lot that is relevant to environmentalism. Like most great thinkers, Gandhi’s views are flawed; however we learn a lot by studying his views critically. After centuries of “development” that have led to the extreme environmental catastrophes of the Anthropocene period, the least that we can do is to pay attention to these critiques.

‘Deal of the Century’ is Not New and the PA Leadership is Not a Victim
by Dr Ramzy Baroud

Donald Trump’s ‘deal of the century’ will fail. Palestinians will not exchange their 70-year long struggle for freedom for Jared Kushner’s cash; nor will Israel accept even if there is a demilitarized Palestinian state in the West Bank.

Global Wars and Insanity Fast Becoming Entertainment: Is It the End of Human Ingenuity?
by Dr Mahboob A Khawaja

We live in one Planet Earth. What happens across the globe or in the remote jungles of Botswana and or in the rugged mountains of Afghanistan or the bloody streets of Kabul, Damascus and Baghdad, it is vital to global interests and cannot be ignored because European or American television networks do not portray it

Fallacy of Vancouver’s Unsustainable “Making Room” Urban Density Plan
by Irwin Jerome

If, at the point of first contact, the early European colonizers had undertaken such a reconciliation process what might the indigenous elders of wherever in the New World have councilled them, short of “GO AWAY AND LEAVE US ALONE!”, about how to live in balance, harmony and real sustainability?

Overpopulation Problem? What Overpopulation Problem?
by Ugo Bardi

I keep reading more and more comments about overpopulation on the social media. It is not just an impression: the trend of increasing interest in population matters is visible in Google Trends. Still weak, but it is there.

A United Arab Emirates-backed Saudi effort to wrest control from Jordan of Islam’s holy places in Jerusalem signals a sharper, more overt edge to Saudi religious diplomacy and the kingdom’s quest for regional hegemony that risks deepening divides in the Muslim world.

An Immigrant’s Tale: The blood of the Tatars
by Mary Metzger

They look at my eyes, and notice, that despite the fact that they are blue, they are but small slits….very Asiatic. They continue to gaze at me, mouths hanging open, a slight blush on their cheeks, and nodding their heads. Then I remind them of what Vladimir Putin once said: “Scratch a Russian and you will find a Tatar.”

The Lures of Kleptocracy: Malaysia’s Najib Condition
by Dr Binoy Kampmark

While the Mahathir Mohamad show is in full force, the former prime minister Najib Razak, finds himself in the dock facing graft charges. His plight is no doubt a good demonstration that embezzling funds and gaining assets should be done in spectacular fashion.  Do not stop at the pennies and mild theft: go the whole hog.

Man With The White Beard: A Journey Into Our Nightmares
by Binu Mathew

The book is as much as a healing touch as an awakening to the horrors of the present day realities of India. A nightmare we are all living! As we live out this nightmare, the author reminds us that the colour of blood is red and the colour of human flesh is lilac!
